Thank You Pink!
I was watching tv today and was made aware of this song by Pink and I'd just like to say THANK YOU!! Just a couple of months ago Pink released a controversial song called "Stupid Girls". It's about time someone famous had the guts to speak out about this kind of thing. The song basically talks about girls who try to act and look a certain way just to be sexy.
I would first like to say that I agree with the idea expressed in this song, those girls are being stupid. I'm sick of girls thinking that being pretty is worth putting all your time, energy and effort into and being smart is worthless. And if you ask any of these girls about that kind of thing I'm sure they'd say, "oh no, being smart isn't worthless" and inside they're really saying, "but that's just not my thing" or, "I'm just not that way".
According to a Women's News article people are saying, "... Should we really be calling each other stupid? That's not doing anything to solve the problem of how young women are being portrayed. Why aren't we analyzing the culture that demands this kind of image from them?"
My answer to that is yes, we should be calling each other stupid because it seems to be the only thing that works these days, that and well, they are being stupid. I mean, which is more important, making sure that someone doesn't feel badly about the way they're acting or telling them straight out that it's idiocy in a can; it's a tough world out there, the truth hurts. The other part of the quotation states that we're "not doing anything to solve the problem of how young women are being portrayed". While that may be true, I think to fight this battle we need a two pronged attack the first being against the culture of being stupid but we also need to teach girls to take some responsibility for their own actions. We seem to be living in a society where it's always someone elses fault for the things that we do, whether it be the enticing fast food chains or the constant commercials for diet clinics. But in truth, we all have a choice, if you don't feel that you have a choice about these things then perhaps you should consider seeing a psychiatrist about that.
Being pretty and taking pride in your appearance is ok, just don't overdo it. It's not all about Calories and dress sizes; agonizing over these things will only drive you crazy. Why not concentrate on other things that you're interested in, things you want to do, places you want to go and see, be your own somebody, not someone elses somebody.
