Remembrance Day Poppies

Remembrance Day is just a couple of days away and the veterans are out at the mall asking for donations for the annual poppy campaign. It would seem that Australia "celebrates" Remembrance day the same as Canada does and on the same day as well.

I got this poppy while I was at the mall the other day and just have a look at this thing. The petals have texture, the centre is black and not just black but with some detail too.

And check out the backs of these poppies, they have safety pins! Just imagine if they thought to make these in Canada. No more stabbing yourself with a bent pin every year, or breaking off pieces of pink eraser to make sure they stay on, imagine that.

On the front of the card that the poppy came on it says:

REMEMBRANCE DAY

At the 11th hour,
of the 11th day,
of the 11th month...

We will remember them.

And on the back it has the Flanders Fields Poem:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark the place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are Dead. Short days ago
We lived felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up your quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields. Posted by Picasa

Appartantly those Australian's are a lot smarter than us.I like those poppies.

We were hit by a thunder strom this morning. I always sleep through storms and this one woke up. My room is in the basement and I can never hear anything. It was loud

Hi Val,
Very cool poppies! If you can, could you pick me up a few to use in the classroom next year? Any donation you make will gladly be refunded.
Thanks,
Sue.

Ok, I'll go pick some more up in the City tomorrow. I didn't realize there'd be such an interest in these.
